Group
provides NJDOC facilities with the the tactical and technical support that is is is is is required during a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a crisis situation The The unit is is is is is a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a liaison to the the State of of New Jersey’s Office of of Emergency Management and and maintains mutual aid agreements with local state and and federal law enforcement agencies The Special Operations

is is comprised of several units • • • • • • Special Operations
Response Team (SORT) – SORT SORT consists of 13 operators that are trained in in in in the following roles and skill sets: EMTs breachers marksmen chemical agents defensive tactics repelling Security Threat Group
(STG) identification mobile field force and tactical operators Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) – CERT CERT consists of of 150 facility-based members from the the the Northern Central and Southern regions of of New Jersey The primary duties are large-scale large-scale disturbance control tactical search operations large-scale large-scale support support of of of the New Jersey State Police and and Office of of of Emergency Management and and support support functions of SORT Chemical Ordnance Biological Radiological Aid Unit (COBRA) – COBRA COBRA consists of 60 regionally based hazardous materials (Hazmat) technicians Hazmat Hazmat Hazmat specialists and Hazmat Hazmat Hazmat Hazmat operation custody staff members The The COBRA unit is is primarily equipped to to perform gross technical and and tactical decontamination during Hazmat Hazmat incidents incidents The The COBRA Unit Unit is prepared to to to respond to to to and and mitigate internal hazardous material incidents incidents as as well as as support State Hazardous Material Response Units when requested to to to do do do so Canine Canine Unit Unit – This unit unit is is is is is deployed throughout the state on on a a a a a a a a a a a a a daily basis The The Canine Canine Unit Unit consists of of of of of two supervisors 13 handlers and and and a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a total of of of of of 27 canines The The unit unit can can perform a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a variety of of of of of tasks from narcotic searches of of of of of people and and and property to to the the tracking of of of of of criminals as as as as well as as as as missing persons Other functions include explosive device detection detection detection cellular phone detection detection detection detection tobacco detection detection detection detection evidence recovery criminal apprehension and and and passive and and and aggressive scent detection detection detection The unit also provides demonstrations to to schools and and and civic organizations Special Search Team (SST) – SST SST is is comprised of of approximately 60 facility-based members members from the the the the Northern Central and Southern regions of of of of New Jersey The The primary function of of of of the the the the the the SST SST is tactical search operations The The members members members of of of of SST SST will be be be be deployed to facilities throughout the the the the the state when needed needed accompanied by members members of of of the the the the the SORT and the the the the Canine Unit SST is equipped with the the the the appropriate tools needed needed during a a a a a a a a a a a a large-scale search Office of Emergency Management (OEM) – OEM OEM provides the the basis for coordinated emergency emergency operations planning throughout the the the Department prior to during and and after a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a disaster disaster or or or or or or emergency emergency OEM establishes the the architecture for a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a systematic coordinated and and and effective departmental response to emergencies and/or disasters that may tax or or or or or or exceed a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a facility’s resources and and and and capabilities OEM also sets forth guidance policies and and and and procedures for for the Department in its its development of of emergency emergency plans and and and its its support of of emergency emergency management activities
